The Well: A missional community of Christ followers

Who We Are

The Well began in the hearts of three visionary couples, in the summer of 2006. With the approval and commissioning of the leadership of their home church, Northview Christian Life Church, these leaders made the decision to plant a new kind of church—a fresh expression of Christianity. Several other couples joined the launch team, and in January of 2007, they began meeting weekly to pray, study Scriptures, dream and re-envision the shape that the church will have to take to have a voice and influence in a post-modern culture. Inspired by Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman in John 4, we are a community that desires to help all people experience the “living water” that Jesus offers.

Our hearts ache for our fellow suburbanites who are pursuing wealth, pleasure, power, success, bigger and better, only to discover the temporary fulfillment and emptiness that accompanies the pursuit of these things. We have considered the extensive research that shows how our relentless pursuit of the “American dream” has made us the loneliest nation in the world with some of the highest rates of suicide and depression on the planet.

Furthermore, we realize that while we collect and accumulate stuff, there are millions of people (our neighbors, according to Jesus) in the world who are suffering and dying for lack of food, water, medicine, protection—all resources that we have the ability to help provide. What’s more, we find hundreds of Scriptural directives that call those of us who have been blessed with abundance—to give sacrificially to those who have nothing.

We believe that God’s heart aches as well—for the empty and isolated suburbanites and for the suffering and oppressed around the block, and around the world.

What might happen if those of us in the suburbs re-envisioned suburban life where God’s kingdom could find full expression? And what if those of us in the suburbs began to reorder our lives so that we could give our time, energy, and finances to the least of these (see Matthew 25)? Those are some of the key questions of which those of us of The Well are trying to find answers.
