House Churches
What is a House Church?
House churches are groups of people (usually between 6-18) who are committed to doing life together the way that Jesus described it. These are deep, brother and sister type relationships (Matthew 12:46-50) where people strive to experience the kind of loving community that the early church was known for (Acts 2:42-46). As we share life, love and serve one another and a broken world as Jesus commanded (John 13:34-35), we will strive to model relationships--as God dreams for them to be—for those who are not-yet followers of Christ.
Why do you have house churches?
House churches are formed, first and foremost, for the purpose of mission. From the nation of Israel in the Old Testament to the disciples and the early church in the New Testament, God has been using communities of His followers to make Himself known to all creation. It’s why we’re here! Jesus declared the presence of the Kingdom of God (God’s dreams for His creation) and made that presence known by reaching out to the poor, oppressed, marginalized, hungry, and neglected of His day and we have been called to do the same—together—in Jesus’ name. Each house church serves the common mission of The Well together. As it was in the Scriptures, so it is today: mission is the catalyst for living a holistic life which includes becoming more like Jesus and living as family—all of which are essential components for a healthy House Church and a healthy Christ-follower.
What happens at house churches?
House churches are the places where we live out the “one another” commands of Scripture—love one another, serve one another, care for one another, etc. Our house churches operate on a 3-week rotation. The first week is a prayer week where we pray for one another, for our church, community and our missional partners. The second week is a discussion week. During this week we have discussion about the things we are learning together during the gatherings and how we can apply those things to our lives and hold one another accountable. The third week is a serving week. On serving week, the house church will go and volunteer a couple of hours at an organization that is serving our community. We’ve served at places like Third Phase, Chaucie’s Place, Community Caring Foundation, Trinity Free Clinic and many others. As we commit ourselves to prayer, discussion and service, we develop the kind of brother and sister-like relationships that Jesus commanded His followers to commit to.
